American Sign Language 1 Pre-Registration

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Learn the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL)--including the alphabet, basic greetings, and other essential topics--and discover the rich history and culture of the American Deaf community in a supportive environment.
This will be led by local Deaf educator, Amy Robinson.

HOW TO APPLY
In order to create equitable opportunities for all, admittance into American Sign Language 1 will be determined based on pre-registration answers. Class size is limited. 

Everyone interested is strongly encouraged to apply! 

Pre-registration will be completed through the following Google Form: PRE-REGISTRATION FORM
Pre-registration opens March 1, 2024. 

WHEN DO THE CLASSES MEET 
Every Tuesday from 6:00 - 7:00 PM starting April 9 through May 7 (5 classes in total) in the Friends Community Room.

FUTURE PROGRAMS
Basics of American Sign Language 1.5 will be offered from May 14 - June 11. Registration opens April 1, 2024. 

Basics of American Sign Language 1 & 1.5 will return in the Fall. Please check back later for specific dates.

Poetry Contest! (For All Ages!)

Celebrate National Poetry Month by entering our poetry contest!  

This contest will be adjudicated by Onondaga County Poet Laureate, Georgia A. Popoff.  

 

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES 

Participants can submit their work in the following relevant categories:  


Youth  

Grades 4, 5, 6 

Grades 7, 8, 9 

Grades 10, 11, 12 

 

Adults 

Ages 18 – 54 

Ages 55+  


CONTEST GUIDELINES 


Submitting Work 

    • Submissions must be original work.  
  • At the top of the page, every submission should have:  

(1) the first and last name of the author;  

(2) the submission category; and 

(3) contact information, including email, address, and phone number  

    • Digital submissions must be submitted by PDF to the Adult Services Librarian at tpettitt@onlib.org between April 1 and April 30 @ 7:00 PM.  
  • Email subject lines should look as follows:  [First Name, Last Name]; Submission Category 

    • Physical submissions must be turned in at the Circulation Desk between April 1 and April 30 @ 7:00 PM. 
    • Physical submissions will not be returned to the author. Please make a copy before turning the work in.  

 

Format 

  • Participants may submit only one poem. 
  • Submissions must not exceed 30 lines.  
  • All submissions must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font 

 

PRIZES 

Winners will be notified in May. 


Grades 4, 5, 6 

Prize: Magnet poetry set and journaling kit 


Grades 7, 8, 9 

Prize: Bookmark kit and journaling set 


Grades 10, 11, 12 

Prize: Journal/pen set and Barnes & Noble gift card 


Ages 18 - 54 

Prize:  

  • One seasonal workshop of the winner's choice at the Downtown Writers Center (DWC) in *Downtown Syracuse, paid for by the library. The workshop must be taken in the Summer or Fall of 2024.

Ages 55+ 

Prize:

Taxpayer Assistance Program (TAP) with the NYS Dept. of Taxation and Finance

Representatives from NYS Department of Taxation and Finance will provide free tax filing assistance for patrons.

Trained Tax department staff provide over the shoulder assistance and exclusively walk patrons through the software and the filing process. They do NOT provide tax advice and do NOT file taxes for patrons.

Registrants must have: 

  • a federal adjusted gross income of $79,000 or less to qualify
  • basic computer skills
  • an active email (bring your password!)
