Event Details

Marcellus Library is excited to announce the hosting of the New York Council for the Humanities Adult Reading & Discussion Program "Pulitzer "Campfire" Readings: Reaching for the American Dream."  Celebrate the centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes with Matthew D. Stewart, PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Syracuse University.  Our first book discussion, taking place September 1st, will be Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner.

Additional books include Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, American Pastoral by Philip Roth, A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.  Each novel in this series resonates with our contemporary moment, by looking at how authors have depicted our struggles to better ourselves and achieve the American dream – and how, despite our efforts, we can end of up unfulfilled or at odds with other elements of society.

Discussions take place at 6:30 pm on Thursday September 1 (Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose), September 22 (Philip Roth, American Pastoral), October 27 (Jhumpa Lahiri, Interpreter of Maladies), November 17 (Junot Diaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao), and December 8 (Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad).

Space is limited, please register here or by calling 673-3221.  Books will be available to borrow from the library.

Program made possible through a generous grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.  More information available here.
